This semester was one of the most tiring periods of my entire academic education. Every single weekend and holidays were like precious diamonds for me. Luckily it passed away like the wind and when winter break was finally upon us, I have decided to visit my brother in Ohio and relax. Of course, it wasn’t just slacking off all day long and playing Skyrim(because that’s what Ece from two years ago would do), I also showed the decency to make small trips to nearby cities. I’ve been to Washington and my favorite city of all time, New York! My final stop of my not-so-productive winter break was Buffalo, NY, with the intentions of seeing Niagara Falls. It kind of falls into the category of `Stupid things to do in the middle of winter` because it gets incredibly cold and windy in Niagara Falls.
One of my first long distance train journeys was this one. It was only for three hours, but still, it included trains for a fair amount of time. Getting to the station was the stressful part because my know-it-all brother thought he didn’t need any navigation. We ended up in a godforsaken(and wrong, I might add) train station and figured out which train station to go to 10 minutes before the departure. Luckily, I made it to the right station and got to the train. yes, stress had ended but something was wrong. As the sun shined upon my face, I suddenly got the urge to take a photo of the coach I was in along with the outside, and realized my camera lens wasn’t working. The pictures were blurry, shutter wasn’t working and I almost started crying because all my plans were on hold.
Above picture is the small summary of the pain I was in. Luckily for me, I texted my dear friend Hande immediately, and she told me we can go around the town to search for a cheap and compatible lens for me Nikon. As I got off the train, I started walking towards the voice that was calling me. It was coming from a pepper red Audi. Hande and his boyfriend Enver were there to welcome me to Buffalo. They were kind enough to search for a lens with me for my camera after a really nice breakfast that included bacon, eggs, pancakes and unlimited coffee!! We basically tried every single camera store—both local stores and Best Buy to find 18-55 mm lens(because lets face it I have no money). Our last line of defense was the successful one and I got my lens back after driving at least 25 miles around town. This small adventure took us more than 2 hours, we then decided it was time to go home to relax and then head out for the Niagara Falls.
We took a “lazy break” for about an hour, and this also gave me time to practice my blackjack skills, because we were obviously going to gamble after the falls. Our companions, tea, Oreo and internet didn’t let us go for a while, but then we knew we had to leave soon if we wanted to see the Niagara falls before dusk. So we grabbed our stuff and drove to Niagara Falls with the fire-red Audi! After thirty minutes or so, we saw the Canadian side of the falls with the fancy towers and casinos. We parked the car and started walking and MAN!!! IT WAS COLD AS HELL.
Seriously. If there is a hell, it’s not fiery and hot. It’s FIFTEEN DEGREES BELOW ABSOLUTE ZERO(for those of you lacking-sarcasm-detectors, this is a futurama reference.) and it definitely is Niagara Falls because all the mist coming from the falls turns into small pieces of ice that sprays your skin like small bullets and if you’re not wearing any gloves like I didn’t(I admit this was a stupid thing to do), your hands are going to be the ones that suffer. And this becomes a terrible burden because it feels like small needles are piercing your skin as you’re trying to take some good pictures and have fun with your friends. Try to take a little break. Either put your hands in your pockets or try to warm up in the gift shop.
So remember. If there is a hell, it’s going to be really cold and it’s going to be Niagara Falls. But hell is not always bad! Think of all the awesome things you’ve done to get there… Okay, this was a terrible metaphor so let’s drop all this and let me tell you why Niagara Falls is awesome in Winter:
Because it’s as beautiful and white as heaven could be. All that ice, snow and water just turns this place into somewhere magical because it’s nothing but white there. There are several places you can see the falls and one of them is an observation deck just in the imaginary border between Canada and United States. The above picture was taken in that observation deck. There is another place I completely fell in love with. It’s the rightmost end of the falls if you look really closely. Yes, as you can imagine, it takes a really long time to get there and road to that place is incredibly painful but beautiful as always. It took me around thirty minutes to walk that half a mile but it was definitely rewarding. This is how it looked like while walking:
As you can see, it’s all ice. Even the grass was covered with a really thick layer of ice because of all the mist coming from the falls. Trying to walk to the end of that road where the people are was one of the hardest things I’ve ever done in my life. Seriously. I am a terrible ice skater by nature and walking on ice is even worse. Especially if you have a really large backpack and a huge camera with you. But in the end, it was all rewarding and the scene we came up with was this:
Luckily for us, Hande’s boyfriend came to save the day with his fire-red car and picked us up from the beautiful hell that is Niagara Falls. Later in the day we went to the Seneca Casino and guess what? There are shitloads of people in there. I felt so sad because one of the greatest wonders of the world only had 50 people around it because it was really cold but the casino just a couple of hundred meters away from it had all the people inside. Gambling is seriously a problem in everywhere. and believe me when I say this, because I’ve already seen Las Vegas and Atlantic City.
Enough of the sadness. We should be enjoying the beauty nature has to offer to us! I, personally, consider myself lucky to have seen this wonder and would definitely recommend you to see it on winter when there aren’t many people around to ruin the joy of seeing the falls and when everything is white and gives you the illusion of purity. Maybe next time, I’ll go to Niagara Falls on summer and take the exact same pictures!
And also, I’d like to thank Hande and her boyfriend Enver for enduring me the whole time I spent there and giving me the quick tour. Your hospitality is very much appreciated! I hope one day I could return the favor!
Oh – I love Niagara Falls in the winter! My favourite is a cold and sunny day in Feb – the ice crusts over all the tree branches and sparkles in the sunlight!! I have only seen from the Canadian side, but it is gorgeous! Just remember – all those empty parking spaces closest to the fence are empty for a reason! Your car will become encrusted in ice!!!
I’ve never been to the falls but it
seems the freezing mist has an
effect very similar to freezing rain.
We get it some winters. If you look
up close it is as if every thing is
encased in a layer of glass, the
branches ring like wind chimes in
the wind, and icesickels hang from
everything.
amazing picture
absolutely, awesome shots!
Amazing pictures, thank you for sharing them with us!
I went to Niagara Falls more than 20 years ago on a band tour and we played a concert on the bandstand in the park at the head of the Canadian falls (I think it was somewhere near the foot of the Skylon tower?) It was absolutely stunning and I would love to go back one day. Your pictures brought it to life again for me, so thank you so much for that. I can just imagine your poor skin being flayed by the frozen spray…ouch!!!
My favorite shot is the Lazy Break one.
Wow, I’ve wanted to visit the falls for as long as I can remember now and always thought summer was the time to do it, but winter looks like it has its gorgeous advantages as well! Thanks for the beautiful pics!
Hey there’s nothing stupid about visiting Niagara Falls in the winter, unless of course your not dressed properly for it! Cause it is FREEZING. I went to college in the windy-cold-friendly city of Buffalo and loved it. One of my best memories is visiting the falls (on the Canadian side) in January. It is truly MAGICAL. Almost hard to describe beautiful. Great pics!
I really like the fifth image from the top. It shows the atmosphere of Niagara Falls and the fact that it is winter. Great pictures.
Love the pics x
greetings from angola, you rock! şaka lan şaka ben murat, güzel çekmişsin :*
Beautiful pictures! I’ve been there in August and it actually looks a lot more fascinating in winter! Thanks for sharing and congratulations on getting Freshly Pressed.
Hope to see you on my blog soon! http://littleexplorer.wordpress.com
Nice photos!
“the beautiful hell that is Niagara Falls”
Interesting way to put it! Next time, stick to the CANADIAN side!
You’ll be glad you did! Great shots, by the way!
So true.. check out the Canadian side.. much better view!! Also.. it’s been spring-like tempertures other then this weekend… you came at the right time to get winter falls pictures!
Gorgeous photos! Glad I’m not there, though!
Beautiful.
I never new Niagara Falls could be so breathtaking.
These are absolutely astonishing pictures! Thank you!
I was happy to see you use a Nikon like me :)
I have had a WordPress photography site for a couple months now, I really enjoy sharing photos just like you do!
Oh, my – that looks so, so cold
No illusion…sounds pretty pure to me….
Like Joe above, I’ve always wanted to visit Niagara Falls but always seemed to assume I’d go in Summer. I never even imagined what it might look like in the cold, actually. Apparantly Winter is the time to be there!
Thanks for sharing!
Beautiful photographs !
Wow your photos are brilliant. Its not somewhere ive thought of going in winter but i definatly want to now!
great view of of photography. terrible feeling I never expressed respect to the site owner for those strategies. All the people had been absolutely passionate to read all of them and have in effect extremely been loving them.

My brother in law got married not far from Niagara Falls on the Canadian side in Mid-December a few years ago in the middle of a WHITE OUT blizzard!! It’s the only time I’ve been to the falls and I agree…It was COLD COLD COLD!!!! But beautiful (when we managed to get there after the blizzard and there actually some visability.) Gorgeous pictures. I wish I would have had my good camera back in those days! Congrats on being freshly pressed!
Gorgeous — but man, it looks cold! :(
Beautiful photos.
I was born and grew up about 10 minutes from where you took them so I’ve been there many many times and know alllll about that weather!! I’m living abroad now so it was nice to see this :)
Congrats on Freshly Pressed!
Stay warm!
Steph
Love your photos. Just looking at them makes me feel COLD!
this entry made me laugh, we too just recently visited Niagara falls. After Christmas we decided to stop by on our way back to New England from Ohio…it was FREEZING and Raining. Terribly cold, but also so cool to see something so amazing with no one else around. Next time I would like to visit in the summer, but it was pretty awesome to have a “private showing” of the falls because, well, lets face it most people are smarter than to visit in the winter
hahaha you’re absollutely right! but i’m glad i went there thhis time of the year because there weren’t many people around!!
Really gorgeous shots! Thanks for sharing and congrats on being freshly pressed!
Dangerously beautiful!
Beautiful pictures! I like the penultimate the most.
Awesome pictures. I’ve been in the summer and fall to Niagara but after viewing these the next time I go will be in winter!
the Falls are awesome. I’ve been there many years ago, but not in winter. Beautiful shots.

I’ve been there only in the winter, too, and your lovely photos brought back some cold, but beautiful memories. ‘Twas invigorating, I’m sure! Brrrrr. Would love to see it in the summer! Best wishes with your blog.
Beautiful photos.
Realmente um lugar muito bonito.
I think we will try going in summer or fall first, even though I was born in Canada I don’t like the cold either :)
Congrats on being freshly pressed!
The entire theme brings chills to my bones. Cold, damp and aspiring power of mother nature. Let me enjoy these in a warm home. Great series!
Fantastic photographs of the falls. I visited Niagra Falls in September 1986–it was warmer then and swarms of tourists buzzed about.
Thank you so much for this post which I found via freshly pressed. I visited Niagara Falls as an infant in the winter and really want to go back. More so after reading this post. Long way from New Zealand though!
Wow, it looks so COLD!!! And beautiful!
It is definitely a different place in the summer. Congratulations on being freshly pressed!
wow! Nice photos!
Wow! You east coast people are sturdy! Warm up by looking at our photos of Kauai on another wordpress blog, kauaikolea.wordpress.com. I need to go put on a sweater after looking at your great but icy pictures!
hahaha i’m not really an east coast person, I’m a foreign student studying in Montana State University and I was in Niagara Falls for my winter break. It gets really cold in Winter in Montana too, but this was a different type of cold since it was really humid! But yes, I will take a look at your pictures. I’m excited to see them!!
it’s nice to get away, isn’t it? i have to admit Niagara falls is nothing i imagined in my head after reading a book where the setting took place there.
Beautiful photographs and a well written article! I am planning to go to Waterloo for grad studies. Man, I have some nasty winters ahead! ( I am from a sun-loving country.)
By the way, absolute zero is -273 degrees below zero and it is the lowest temperature physically possible so you probably don’t mean 15 degrees below *absolute* zero. I would not have corrected you if you had not been so insistent on it.
Anyways, really really nice photographs.
I’m a Turkish bioengineering student studying in Montana State University and it gets really cold in here too! I got used to it, though. One thing I wasn’t really used to was humid colds. because in Montana, it’s really dry!!
also, let me get something clear there, don’t you think it’s a little weird I know what absolute zero is, but a little insistent on still calling it `below absolute zero`? :)) I had heard that joke in Futurama and thought this situation was the best one to use that phrase. Sorry if I got you confused.
Those photos are awesome! I’m cold just looking at them. :)
Wonderful wintery photos. Makes me cold just looking…
love your photos.. i always see pictures of niagara falls during sunny weather and seeing photos of it during winter is awesome. thanks for sharing.
wow, dream pictures. That’s awesome….
great pictures, i have plans to go visit by next summer, i wish i could do it on winter, but well seoul isn’t a bad destination for winter neither so i will enjoy seoul for now
Thank you for your beautiful pictures. Niagara Falls in winter is just spectacular. As previously stated the falls are usually photographed in summer. The temperature there is the opposite to here in Outback Australia. We are experiencing 40 deg C + or over 100 deg F here. Your photos helps give a cooling perspective. Thank you.
Oh, that sounds horribly cold! But your pictures make it look heavenly.
Lovely post! I enjoyed reading about your travels! I live in Niagara Falls on the Canadian side and I love the photos you took!! You are right, it does get incredibly cold (although we’ve mostly had a warm Winter with temperature above zero which is very unusual)!
Great post and beautiful pictures of one of my most favorite places of all times. My husband and I honeymooned in Niagra Falls 26 years ago, but it was in August and not in the dead of winter. The weather was beautiful AND I MEAN BEAUTFIUL that week… Blue skies, warm sunny days and perfect nights. I loved everything about Niagara Falls, and after reading this, I do believe I would like to see it in the winter!
Haha, I work in this park every day. It was great this morning, no wind and snow falling. But yes it was freaking cold. But I enjoyed it making a snow man on my lunch break =]
Amazing post!!! is looks like a really beautiful place and your pictures are really great.. :-D
I love your pics!! I live a half hour from Niagara Falls and have only been there once in the winter, it was really, really cold. I’d much rather visit in the summer, the mist is refreshing then.
Nice post indeed, beautiful shots..
Wow, really amazing photos. So magical and surreal. Thanks for sharing!
These photos are amazing! Thank you for sharing :)
weldone good work
The only Niagara that I’ve ever visited is the fake one in Window of the world, China.. that was awesome.. but this is incredible!
I’m going there in the next two years (can’t wait!)
Beautiful pictures. Even though I live in NYC, I have been somewhat hesitant to head to Niagara Falls during the winter, as I worried that the cold temperatures and snow might ruin a trip that most people make in the summer. However, once I saw your pictures (and subsequently showed them to my girlfriend), we immediately decided to make a trip up next weekend. So, I just wanted to write and say thank you very much, and let you know that our trip from Manhattan next weekend is happening based on your post. We’re both very excited!
Great photos. I’ve always wanted to see the place in the winter.
Wow I’ve always dreamed of visiting!
I loved all the freezing pics.
Really love your beautiful pictures…..
Hi, Your website is so cool, thank you and keep it up very nice job,, it is also a good website it is also an amazing website

amazing pictures… I was there in the summer and its crazy to think that when I went it was hot and humid yet in winter its almost a completely different place and so cold!
One of the things I love about Americans is there gene for adventure :D. it truly inspires me!
I havent visited Niagra falls in summer, I am hoping to visit it this June/July!
But even the pictures look so breathtaking, I feel like visiting it in winters!
But I really wont be able to bear the chilly winds, since it doesnt get mch chilly in my town!

Beautiful photos
That’s beautiful! These pictures take me back in summer 2008 when I was in Canada and I could admire this gorgeous natural wonder, and seeing it in all white it’s even more amazing! Oh I really wish I could go there again..!
Absolutely awesome pictures!
So gorgeous!
beautiful pictures
I am a resident of the Niagara Region – albeit on the Canadian side – and LOVE the Falls in the winter … there aren’t as many people, the view of the falls with the ice and snow cleans up all the polution and makes it seem so pure!!
I LOVED your pictures – you have captured the beauty extremely well.
A word or warning … if you do decide to come in the summer, beware of ridiculous tourist antics, massive crowds, and major traffic … I would hate for the summer to ruin what the winter has lead you to believe :)

I really enjoyed reading this blog entry. Your voice is humorous and compelling and your photos made me cry. I especially liked the photo with the iced ground and trees. Looks like I’ll be following your blog!
I’ve only been to Niagara Falls once about 20+ years ago but it was in the dead of winter, too. I was so impressed, all that water flowing over and landing on huge, brilliant icebergs in the river below! It snowed that day, too. And cold, was it ever cold! I took a picture of the temperature because being from sunny California I knew all my friends wouldn’t believe I survived below zero temperatures.
Thank you for your lovely pictures, they have sparked a desire to return, in the winter and saybe even in the summer too!
So romatic:) Like the icy pics!
Niagara Falls is one of my favorite places in the world! My boyfriend grew up very close to there, and we try to visit the falls every time we head up to New York. It’s amazing in winter, though yes — really cold. Really, really cold. Gorgeous photos!
I just know the falls from our last vacation in summer. They seem definately woth a visit in winter as well!
All I can say is WOW! It looks amazing!
Btw, this semester have been horrible for me too. Too much to do and now it’s finally over. :)

It looks so beautiful. It sounds like an amazing break where you got to see so much!
I saw Niagara in IMAX format, very impressive. Good photos!
I was born in Niagara Falls and spent a few weeks every summer there through my high school days. My grandparents lived on Tenth Street, just a few blocks from the falls. But it wasn’t until my mid-30s that I went to Niagara Falls in the winter. As you say, it was very cold but magical. It’s been years since I’ve been back. But it’s on my radar now.
If only it were colder (like hell, I suppose) and you could ice-climb there… nice pictures. It sounds like a really cool trip. Most good stories to tell were hard to live through at times.
Great photos!!
These photos make niagara falls in the winter look amazing, I went there in July and loved it when i was volunteering in Rochester
You sir, are amazing at photography. Teach me to take pictures like you?
Loved the winter pictures, Seeing the falls is a memorable experience…. Just saying
Gorgeous. I’ve never been to the American side of the Falls, but I’ve been to the Canadian side during winter and the Falls are just breath-taking. I certainly agree about not forgetting gloves. I’ve don that and while the pics came out nicely, it really hurt my hands. Your photos are lovely :)
Your photos got better as I scrolled down your blog on Niagara Falls. Not one of my favorite places in the winter cold though. But nice photo shots and photoshop follow up too. Glad you got your Nikon lens too. I also work with Nikon stuff.
Long time since I was at Niagara and your post really made me feel very nostalgic indeed. I’d been at the same time of year and your pictures made me feel the cold and the atmosphere so clearly. I see you like Oreos. Me too! Great work.
Ah, my hometown…well, on the Canadian side anyhow. These are lovely photos. I miss Niagara sometimes as I now live in an even colder location in the arctic, but seeing these makes me feel at home. Thanks for sharing!
Nice pictures! I especially like the ones of the trees…I have this thing with trees…LOL.
niagra falls in the winter is a beautiful season in the world where the cold and skate

Beautiful! I just love waterfalls during the winter – the ice and snow adds an extra element that helps bring out the personality of a fall. Great job!
Your photo’s are Fabulous, they make you feel as if you were there, without the COLD. LOL Thanks for the view :-)
I Love Niagra Falls!
I Live In Toronto And Go About Once-Twice A Year!!!
Beautiful in the summer, and apparently the winter, too.

Since you seem to like winter scenes so much, take a look at this one. I took it returning from the RI State House one cold day in February of 2011.
Wow! Your pictures are great and somehow brought me there and experience the beautiful hell, Niagra Falls.
never been into any part of Japan but i love your photos…
Niagara looks absolutely stunning in the winter! Thank you for sharing these wonderful photographs! Best wishes to you!
Really beautiful pictures! I’m so glad you took them and that I can enjoy them without having to wander out in the frozen world myself:)

Wow, I love your pictures!
This photos are amazing!
Photo shooting has been one of my hobbies, since I was a kid and I love your pics.
Beautiful pictures. Love these grey tones.
Thanks for sharing your experience and lovely pictures…
Stunning pictures! Interesting to see a new take on the much photographed Niagara Falls. I’ve never seen it in winter but how lovely it is.
We went to see the Niagra Falls in November 2010 it was a glorious 5 days warm and sunny all day for 5 days, they told us it would be cold but it wasn’t as Canada was warmer than England, the trip to Niagra Falls was awesome. the spray went all over my husband and i ,it was a wonderful feeling, after we visited it we sat across the road sat in the sunshine and got dried, it was a expirence thrilling day that we shall never forget. as Canada is the first time we went, we have not decided yet but might go back to Canada in the summertime but thank you Canada for you hospitality.
Beautiful photographs. I love Niagara Falls, but I’ve only been there in the summer. I’m now tempted to go in winter!
Niagara has always been one of the places I have “WOWOED” about. Amazing natural creation. Went there last year and everytime I see any pic of Niagara and NYC, I relive those moments. Great pics. Thanks for sharing those :-) !!
Wow, excellent images. Its been 15 years since I visited Niagara Falls them but then it is about 3,500 miles away so I have a reasonable excuse.
Oh’ my God!!…..Awesome photographs of Niagara Falls.

This blog is very good and informative. It is difficult task but your post and experience provide and teach me how to handle and make it more simple and manageable. Thanks for the advice. Today I am lucky and I find a lot of nice posts.
Love the icy pics! I am from Toronto, so I go to Niagara Falls on the ON. side quite often.
Go in the summer you will enjoy it MUCH more! LOL
Your photographs are stunning, thy really get over the natural power, danger and freezing temperature. When you say Hell is not hot but frozen you look like you could be right! I wonder how many people veen think to go to Niagara in winter. I really enjoyed reading your writing about the trip too.
Nice job on doing what it takes to get us the pics!!
I’ve only been to the Falls in the Winter, and I was . . . underwhelmed. Next break you get, go see http://www.angelfire.com/ny4/waterfalls/kaaterskillfalls2.html.
Glad you made it back safe.
wow white’s everywhere :D
nice pics :) love them
Your pictures are beautiful. I especially enjoyed the one you took from the observation tower, and the one you took while you were walking with all of the trees. I’ve seen snow and ice, but never to that magnitude.
Do you mind if I quote a couple of your articles as long as I provide credit and sources back to your webpage? My blog site is in the exact same area of interest as yours and my visitors would definitely benefit from some of the information you present here. Please let me know if this okay with you. Thanks a lot!
I’ve only been there once and that was in winter but none of the winter ice and snow for me. Great shots. Takes me back!
The colors in your photos were so eerily beautiful. Almost like stone. I’m glad you sucked it up and made the trek out there. Life is short. I’d rather spend it freezing by the falls then behind the glow of slot machines.
Gorgeous photos!
It’s so beautiful like a dream
Beautiful photos! I agree that hell must be cold – but your pictures look more like heaven to me!
This is awesome! I absolutely loved Niagara Falls when I went. Check out my funny blog of Jake Travelling the World. Here is him going down the falls!

These are beautiful pics! I want to visit Niagara falls sometime in the near future, but I think I might go when it’s a lot less freezing cold… my teeth are chattering just from looking at the pics.
Beautiful photos! It looks freezing, brrr.
Nice winter shots of the American Falls! If you have a passport, be sure to visit the Horseshoe Falls on the Canadian side. Definitely worth the time and effort! Oh, and yes they have a glamorous casino over there as well. I don’t gamble, but the food is great! Sorry to hear about your camera lens failure and I’m glad that everything turned out fine in the end.
Pictures of water always fascinate me, even if it frozen.
Wow, what beautiful scenery!
Stunning photos.
Amazing photos! I’ve always wanted to go to Niagra falls and now that I live in Jersey it’s closer than before (I moved recently from California) so since I’m not much of I winter girl I think I will opt to visit in the Spring. Keep up the great work!
Wow, that looks COLD -but superb shots.Well done.
Your photographs are beautiful! I would love to travel like that!
Spectacular view of Niagara Fall. Great pictures. Beautiful Post!
I love waterfalls. To me, they show the enduring love God has for me. He being the never ending source of love. Thanks for sharing. Connie
http://7thandvine.wordpress.com/
Niagara Falls is stunning in the winter, fall, summer, and spring. Then again, being from WNY, I might be a little biased. If you do manage to come back in the summer, make sure you see them both during the day and at night when they turn on the lights. Stunning! Thanks for sharing your beautiful pictures, and for getting Niagara Falls featured on Freshly Pressed!
I have seen a lot of pictures of Niagara Falls, but never in the winter. It even looks freezing, but how beautiful! Stunning pics.
Nice photos and blog.
It’s beautiful. Not a big fan of the cold but I have a feeling the amazing view is definitely worth it. Really hope I have a chance to witness this one day.
My only experience of Niagra is from the Canada side on a business trip – my first ever – in 1997. It was late March and, when I went down below the falls, everything was solid ice. My friend and I also discovered the casino.
This one really takes me back. Great post.
Niagara Falls is very close to me — my grandparents lived in Niagara-on-the-Lake — your photos are stunning and they made me miss ‘home’. It is an absolutely gorgeous part of Canada. Great post and congrats on being FP’d.
Beautiful photos! I’m originally from Niagara Falls. I remember it looking like an Ice Palace when I was a little girl.
wowwwwwww is funtastic for me ! youre lucky to see this
I love Niagara in winter, especially in February! (no matter how cold it is) :-)

I love Niagara falls in winter and the photographs are beautiful.Drop by my blog sometimes.Cheers
I was there in 2009, never thought ppl go there in winter as well. Love all your pictures! and you make me want to go there again.
These are beautiful pictures! Well worth braving the cold for. :)
Once I experienced Niagara Falls in winter, I never went back in summer. Ever. The angry churning waters just before the drop, the black-white-gray of the area around, the escarpment coated with ice – that’s beauty to me.
I would deliberately schedule a long weekend in the Falls area every January only to soak in these frosty vistas.
>It’s FIFTEEN DEGREES BELOW ABSOLUTE ZERO(yes, absolute zero, I said!!)
– I’m glad Shitikanth referred to this before I did. I was so enthralled with your images, the thought, “What? *Below* absolute zero?” registered ever so briefly before it got swept away by the memories of my time there.
Thank you for (un)freezing an icicle of my past for me, Ece. And ‘Congratulations’ on being FPed!
Kate
I know what absolute zero is. What I wrote in there is a Futurama reference. Please don’t take everything seriously. I know what I am doing.
Dear Ece,
First off, I don’t get a lot of time for personal surfing, so I only just saw your response from 3 days ago.
>I know what absolute zero is.
– I know you do because you explained your major to Shitikanth.
>What I wrote in there is a Futurama reference.
– I got that, too, in your response to his comment.
>Please don’t take everything seriously. I know what I am doing.
– I did not mean to insinuate that you don’t.
It is not for me to tell someone, least of all a person I do not at all, what is right or wrong. I told you what my fleeting, initial thought was when I read “below absolute zero”. I was puzzled momentarily, then got quickly distracted by the images.
I haven’t seen that particular episode of ‘Futurama’, but I bet it was funny. Your reference to it certainly is …. when I realised where you were coming from (after your response to Shitikanth).
A friendly suggestion: In future, when you are going to make a statement that is likely to produce this kind of a backlash, tell us, pompous know-it-alls ;-), that you are joking. Turn it around on us, you know? Say something like, “All you smart a….lecs ;-), take a chill pill. This absurdity is a reference to an episode on X.”
In conclusion, I did not mean to be condescending at all and I am sorry if you felt hurt by that sentence. From the rest of my comment, you can see that I was absolutely delighted to visit a very, um, cool part of my past via your post. :-)
Peace.
Kate
I hope you stayed after dusk…it really is beautiful…the effect of the lights on the snow and the ice is just incredible!
Nice post. I’ve been in the summer months. I need to go in the winter.
excellent post…
I have only been there during summer time but seems winter is more spectaculous!
Went on our honeymooon there…just beautiful photos. Thanks!
fantastic pictures of Niagara. thanks for sharing. this is very nice post

Sorry, not a comment on your great content, I have been testing WordPress and it is so S-L-O-W for everything, especially admin functions. Have you experienced this?
Brett
it was probably already said, but “absolute zero” equates to −459.67 °F.
I’ve already said this: I know what absolute zero is. I know it is impossible to have fifteen degrees below absolute zero. It’s a Futurama reference. This article is supposed to be funny. Not scientific. Relax.

Cool photos.
Beautiful photos, thanks for sharing!
Great pictures, but can’t see Niagra Falls without thinking about the stupid kid playing his grab-the-railing game at the beginning of Superman II.
Wow, I’ve always wanted to go to Niagara Falls and your photos are just breathtaking! Thanks for showing everybody what it looks like at this time of year :)! I really enjoyed it!
Lovely blog – I’m from Buffalo – So seeing those pictures (which turned out quite nice after your lens problems), and hearing your comments, really reminded me of home, and also why I live in Arizona now and NEVER visit in the Winter. lol
It also made me laugh to hear that you went to western NY with NO GLOVES – : )
One small defense for the Casino – American or Canadian Side. For those of us who live in WNY, we unfortunately take the Falls for granted we see them all the time and take friends and relatives every time they come to town. The Casino is a warm and good diversion. People like me go, and I don’t even gamble.
Thank you for showing the world, that even though we are cold and snowy in Buffalo, and Niagara Falls, that is still a beautiful place to visit. Glad you enjoyed your winter break!
Hey, I’ve been there! Not during Winter. Brrr! Cold pictures, but yet so beautiful! Have a great week! :)
I was really just looking at WordPress and hit your Blog. I.D.ed the cup. Small world. From here to there; Go Cats.
first time saw the winter pictures..nice clicks!
I live right in Buffalo! 20min drive to the falls!! thank you for doing a write up
I loved the winter photographs you took.
Your pictures just made me insanely jealous that I haven’t had a chance to go to Niagara Falls yet. Maybe I’ll have to go in winter though, after seeing your pictures!
Was this last Winter or this year’s Winter?
Cheers

Never been there, but those pictures are AMAZING!
I love that shot of the falls by the frozen railing – you can almost hear the power of the water.
Great post, beautiful pictures. Well done.
I agree with you that gambling isn’t the best habit.
Neither is smoking… ;)
Congrats on being freshly pressed!
Having lived most of my life near the Falls, I’ve enjoyed seeing them all year round; winter is amazing; like you, I took photos when snow and ice covered everything, and it was one of the most visually amazing days of my life! Thanks for posting your pics and experience. -Mark from Buffalo-Niagara
Beautiful ;-)
Oh, wow! Some truly amazing pictures, you really captured the essence of Niagra Falls! I feel like I was there with you.
wow! i’ve never seen niagra falls at all but these pictures inspire me to make the trip. thanks for sharing!

Beautiful pictures, glad you hooked up with a friend to find a new lens. Sounds really adventurous too. What do you think you’d do differently if were to visit again.
PS: casino’s turn winners into losers – it’s a bitter chill
great photos!!!
Never been there in winter, but any time it is an incredible sacred place where you can witness the immense power of the earth/water element. Everyone should see it sometime. I’m glad you did.
Beautiful photo’s. Niagara Falls is a very romantic place and the falls is spectacular!
wow this article is very nice. It’s a new inspiration for me. i like it. thank you my friend. Please visit my blog too.
I wish to get there :) What a beautiful place…
One of my most favorite memories, was throwing snowballs over the falls with my Dad when I was about 5 years old. Too young to remember how cold or icy it was, but your pictures definately brought back memories.
Thanks for sharing,
Shannon
Niagara Falls is beautiful, dangerous and majestic in all seasons…;) Great photos . Greetings from Poland
Beautiful pictures and a very well written blog. Thanks for capturing it.

Beautiful! Great quality pictures too!
Oh MY LORD! Cold as it may have been, visiting Niagara Falls in the winter is going on my bucket list because of YOUR post. Thanks for sharing! Wow, it’s so beautiful!!!
Beautiful!
This is so beautiful.
Great adventure: excitement, frustration, fulfillment…ice… Nice post!
Great post! Thank you for sharing!
Gorgeous pictures! I took a trip last January over MLK weekend to Niagara Falls with my roommates. It was a blast, even with a car with no heater!! Thanks for sharing! :)
Was at Niagara a few summers ago.. Was blown away by the power and beauty of it. Out here in Montana.. I about spit my coffee out when I saw the Montana State mug.. lol. GO GRIZ!!
glad you got to explore our frozen corner of New York. I live in Rochester so we bring guests there all the time. But no one comes to visit us in the winter, I wonder why.
Niagra Falls, and the river are quite impressive in the winter. I love watching the huge chunks of ice that build up on the river and the frozen spyres that rise up from the falls. Congratulations on being freshly pressed.
Beautiful. Been there in the summer, now it’s a must to see it in the winter! Thanks for sharing! :D
Beautiful scenes, just as I remember Naigara from my visit in January, 1973. The power and magic of the Falls are very much in evidence in your photos. Of course, the casinos weren’t around back then, so I was lucky to have my car in a close-by parking lot on the Canadian side, as I was headed home from Toronto to Boston that day.
Oh wow!!! I have not been in there since I was 11! Man. I gotta visit again!
Really awesome blog and amazing pictures. I want to go there someday!
wow!!! its really amazing… I enjoyed. thanks for posting.
great pics
Beautiful ! really beautiful place !
The Falls are one of the most beautiful places in the USA or Canada. I didn’t know they could be even more so in the winter months. Thank you!
it’s so beautifull… ^_^
Oh I hate the cold . . . but I think it would be worth it after looking at your photo’s !
i’m glad your lens situation was resolved, because otherwise i wouldn’t have been able to see these beautiful photos! i had no idea niagara falls was so beautiful and serene in the winter. maybe i’ll head on up there sometime… if the cold doesn’t make me change my mind. :)

Your photos are gorgeous! They almost make me want to brave the cold & take the drive to Niagara. Thank you.
Beautiful photos!
Amazing shots! I’ve never been there in the winter. I like your tyle.
HOLY COW! All these responses for such a rant of a blog. (I’ve got 4 and no one gives a rat’s arse.) You should go to the Canadian side, hear tell there’s this “Haunted House” there, worth checking out. How do I know? Some cute adorable 8 year old girl told me about it and how her uncle scared her there. This gal, and her mom and her brother, from Canada, now live in Australia. They were visiting me at my job in California. Things are tough all over to be sure, and it’s all on one’s perspective, but, uh, you know, those images you captured of that place are BEAUTIFUL! Thanks for sharing.
Beautiful photos!
Living in Buffalo, I have been to the falls many times both in summer and winter, and your description as a frozen hell is quite accurate. I love the way everything freezes over though, the prettiest version of a winter wonderland I could imagine. I would definitely return in the summer if given the opportunity though! Try the maid of the mist or have a picnic overlooking the falls. Those of us who live here take it for granted but it really is a beautiful place! Thanks for sharing your experience!
:)
I lived in Buffalo for two years and loved seeing the falls in the winter. I’d often drive up on weekends by myself just to see the majesty of the frozen falls and mist covered landscape. Thanks for your blog … It brought me a flood of memories from an amazing part of the country!

breathtaking…I saw the Falls (from the Canadian side) in July of 2011…your post has encouraged me to visit in Winter, when I return to Canada!

Lovely pics!!
Gorgeous. I hate winter but I can appreciate the way it makes things look spectacular.
mind-blowing photos!!
Niagara Falls is so beautiful. Am from Buffalo. You’re right about hell being cold.
Looks beautiful and so cold :)
Wow, Niagara Falls is really beautiful in the winter, because the mist is purely white. Now that’s what makes winter complete.
I saw the falls via Canada. (:
I posted on of your shots on pinterest.com for my “Mental Vacation pile” because I’ve always wanted to go to Niagara and I appreciate you sacrificing your body heat to get the fantastic shot of the Falls bordered by snow. Anyone who sees it though will click through to your blog to see more photos! Great job!
love the photo! AMAZING!

Wow, absolutely incredibly beautiful!
Photos of the niagara falls are amazing. You envy you cos you were there :)
I hope one day I can go and see for my self :)
I have been there plenty of times in the summer but never in the winter. It looks like something I would be interested in seeing once in the winter time. But my wife doesn’t like the cold and we live in Halifax Nova Scotia. Thanks for the pics.
Fabulous pictures, and a good read! Stay warm.

Very beautiful pictures! You should see the view from the Canadian side, it’s even more breath-taking.
hi ece! merhaba! sana umut yaşanılan gün? sorry, my turkish is very bad, bordering on useless!
really love your photos of niagara…before i moved to the UK, i used to live in toronto, and i often went to niagara in the winter…and man…was that out of this world!
first time i was there, most of the water roaring down the falls was solid ice…and i mean real thick ice, with huge icicles hanging down, too!
and ur absolutely right about the mist turning into needles…..u find out when it hits ur face!
and the most beautiful things i found there were the trees near the falls…all covered with thick, clear ice…just like glass…magical!
carry on the superb work, ece!
shukran!
Beautiful, power under glass, ice capades, awesome, scary and serene are words that come to mine. I bet you could bust your ass on that ice in the sixth shot! LOL Cheers on getting pressed like a freshly fallen leaf in the ice!
Wow, loving those really good photos!
Beautiful photos!
Great photos! I’ve never seen Niagara Falls from the American side, so it was a refreshing angle. I went in the winter a few years back and I had the same experience. It looked amazing, but was so, so cold – even worse with glasses on.
Well, at least the pictures are pretty! I saw Niagra Falls in the summer, and aside from an incident with some bees, that’s when I’d recommend going. Interesting read, thanks!

Stunning photographs.
I’m truly in awe.

I lived in Buffalo for years, and I got to spend plenty of time in Niagara Falls. It is a beautiful place. I think I only bothered to check it out in the winter when I would go to Canada to party back in the day. Otherwise summer only. :)
this’s one of the most places i want to visit , and after reading this article you make me more interesting in this place and his beauty become even more on my eyes .
you have a good stuff here keep it on .

Go back and see it in the Fall. The colors add to the splendor of the water.
